Manchester United are confident the club will win the race to land Toby Alderweireld from Tottenham Hotspur this summer.
Spurs will sell Belgian central defender after failing to agree on a new deal with the Toby and will use the money to sign Ajax starlet Matthijs de Ligt.
Standard Sport understands that the Red Devils are prepared to spend in excess of £40million on Toby Alderweireld.
Talks between Alderweireld and club’s hierarchy broke down this year after he turned down their last offer. It was believed to be worth about £120,000 a week, which is more than double the £50,000 per week he earns.
With Chelsea, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain all interested, Manchester United are prepared to pay him much more than Spurs’ final offer.
Manchester United are also willing to give Toby a long-term deal that will keep Belgian at Old Trafford into his mid-30s.
Toby’s situation is further complex by a clause in his deal which has two years left to run. It claims he can depart from the club for just £25m next year if no new terms are agreed.
