On Friday the Telegraph link Antonio Conte with a possible transfer for Stoke’s English keeper Jack Butland.
Butland could quickly be installed as England’s number one by the time the 2018 World Cup in Russia starts about in six months.
The fact is that the Telegraph’s report linking Butland to Chelsea is secondary to Chelsea’s efforts to bar down goalie Thibaut Courtois.
For a while, it’s been announced that Chelsea are trying to agree to a new contract with Courtois. On Friday the Telegraph believe such a contract could be close:
Chelsea have been attempting to make Thibaut Courtois the best-paid goalkeeper in the world and are frequently getting optimistic the Belgian will sign a new deal.
Courtois will get, including bonuses, more than the £200,000 a week David De Gea is paid by Manchester United if he contracts a new deal that could run to 2023.
Chelsea are now focusing their energies on trying to ensure the future of Courtois early in the New Year and have put any case in Stoke City and England goalkeeper Jack Butland, and other likely replacements, on hold.
For the record, 24-year-old Butland is under contract at Stoke until 2021.
