Chelsea given green light to sign 28-year-old Senegal international

The London club are ready to submit a new bid to sign Edouard Mendy as Stade Rennes are already in negotiations to sign a replacement for their shot-stopper, according to reports in France. Chelsea boss is keen for Blues to sign a new shot-stopper following Kepa Arrizabalaga’s terrible form last campaign.

Senegal international is on the London giants shortlist but their opening offer of £15m was rejected by the French club last month. However, Ligue 1 club are now preparing for Edouard’s departure this summer as they are actively searching for a replacement.

The report claims that Rennes have already made an approach to sign Alphonse Areola from PSG and can offer him a regular role to help him secure a place in Les Bleus European Championship team next summer. Alphonse spent last campaign on loan at Real Madrid and is not in the Parisians plans for the upcoming season.

Blues are poised to make another bid for Mendy after their first offer was turned down. The Blues have also made an approach to sign Lille shot-stopper Mike Maignan this summer but the Les Dogues demanding €35m.

Meanwhile, the London club are poised to complete the £90m addition of Kai Havertz from Bayer Leverkusen. Reports in Germany have claimed that Germany international completed his medical in London on Sunday and has agreed to a five-year deal.

Kepa endured a tough campaign last time out, with Chelsea boss at times favouring the veteran Willy Caballero. The London club have been linked with several new goalkeepers but are yet to make a signing in that department. Carragher believes the Blues may struggle to challenge at the top of the division if Kepa stays between the sticks.
