Chelsea are exploring the possibility of signing RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol. Chelsea are expected to move in for the 20-year-old centre-back if they fail to add either one of Presnel Kimpembe and Jules Kounde this summer. The London giants’ search for top-class centre-backs this summer has been well documented.
The departures of Rudiger and Christensen and the possible exits of Alonso and Azpilicueta have forced Chelsea to actively look for defensive reinforcements. The Blues recently signed Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli in a £33m deal, but they are still in need of one more defender.
Sevilla’s Jules Kounde is one centre-back who has been on their wishlist since last summer, but they are yet to make a decisive breakthrough in his pursuit. Therefore, the London giants are ready with a list of alternatives, and Croatia international looks to be on top of that.
Gvardiol joined the Bundesliga giants just last summer and became an integral part of their defence immediately. Josko played 46 games for them across tournaments, also scoring two goals and providing three assists. The German club will be reluctant to sell the 20-year-old centre-back this summer.
But a suitable offer from the London giants could convince them to sanction the move. The Croatian defender is also attracting interest from Arsenal and Man City. Meanwhile, Thomas Tuchel has demanded the club’s new owners sign at least two more top-class centre-backs following Kalidou Koulibaly’s arrival.
