Chelsea could be preparing a formal offer for Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong as they plot to beat Man United to his signing. The Netherlands international’s name has been a fixture in the headlines this summer as he continues to be linked with a move away from the Blaugrana.
The Red Devils have been touted as his most ardent suitor as new coach Erik ten Hag is keen on a reunion with his ex-Ajax ward. To that end, Barcelona and Man United have also reached an agreement over a deal worth €85m, including add-ons for the transfer of Frenkie.
However, de Jong has no intentions of leaving the Catalan giants for Man United as he sees it as a step down due to the lack of Champions League football at Theatre of Dreams. Amidst this ongoing saga, Chelsea have also presented themselves as an option for the 25-year-old midfielder.
Chelsea are well-stocked in the midfield department but could need reinforcements as Barkley, Gilmour and Loftus-Cheek are headed for the exit doors, while Saul Niguez has not been signed permanently.
So, a new top-quality midfielder would be a welcome addition at Chelsea. And the Dutchman has emerged as a possible target for the Blues. Recent reports had indicated that Chelsea were offered a chance to sign the Dutch star by his agent. It is now being suggested that Chelsea are considering making a bid for the former Ajax midfielder.
