Chelsea news round-up: Blues to tie down key defender, battle for Napoli star, striker to leave

Chelsea planning to hand £120,000-a-week defender new contract

The London-based outfit Chelsea are set to offer central defender David Luiz a new contract as his current contract expires at the end of the season.

After a year on the sidelines, David has found himself back in the action under new coach Maurizio Sarri, and as such, Chelsea want to tie him down to a fresh deal so he can’t leave for free at the end of the campaign.

As per a report from Simon Johnson of a local, free daily newspaper London Evening Standard, the Blues want David to sign a one-year extension on his existing contract, meaning he’ll be under contract at the Blues until the summer of 2020.

Brazil international turns 32-years-old in April and as such, the north London giants’ policy of only offering one-year extensions to players over 30 comes into effect, hence the short-term offer.

The Brazilian star has admitted that he would have left Blues in the summer had Antonio Conte remained in charge but he’s been rejuvenated under Maurizio Sarri and as such, there’s a good chance that he’ll agree to the extension.

Arsenal identifies €32m Chelsea target as potential Ramsey replacement

The Serie A giants Napoli star Piotr Zielinski has appeared as a target for the London-based outfit Arsenal, according to reports from the Italian media, following reports connecting him with a move to Chelsea.

The Blues have been touted often as a possible destination for the Poland international star, whose importance to Partenopei has grown in the opening periods of the new campaign.

It was reported that Italian manager Carlo Ancelotti’s side were planning a new deal for the central midfielder, with the inclusion of a big-money exit clause prioritised.

According to fresh states from Italian news outlet Sport Mediaset, however, Gunners will target Zielinski if Aaron Ramsey does indeed leave the club in the near future.

The Wales international star sees his contract at the Emirates Stadium reach its expiration date at the end of the ongoing term, indicating that Arsenal will be forced to look somewhere else for midfield reinforcements.

The 24-year-old star is an important part of Partenopei’s plans moving forward and has been a vital part of their side this season, making seven appearances in Serie A.

Chelsea star in official talks with Super Lig giants over potential January move

Turkish top flight Super Lig outfit Besiktas’ officials have reportedly held negotiations with Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud over a possible January deal.

According to Turkey’s one of the most popular sports newspapers Fanatik, as quoted on Turkish Football, Turkish giants are willing to pay €5 million to land the former Arsenal man.

The club are looking to replace Spanish striker Alvaro Negredo, who left for UAE club Al Nassr recently. The report states that Giroud’s representative has given the deal a thumbs up ahead of the new year.

Giroud has emerged as Blues’ first-choice striker this season under Italian manager Maurizio Sarri, with Spain international star Alvaro Morata continuing to struggle in front of goal.

It is highly likely that the north London giants would require a striker to be signed during the January window to allow Olivier to move on, with both young English forward Tammy Abraham and Belgium international Michy Batshuayi away from the club on loan.

Olivier Giroud originally joined Chelsea on an 18-month contract from the Gunners, which also reportedly included the option of an extra year.
