The London giants are reportedly set to pay the €70m required to beat Man United to the transfer of Real Madrid centre-back Raphael Varane this summer. Chelsea look to have stepped up their interest in France international, moving ahead of both Man United and PSG in the running.
The report states that Raphael Varane is a specific target for Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel, and the club are now prepared to meet Real Madrid’s €70m asking price for the Frenchman.
This would be a fine move by the Blues, who would surely benefit from bringing in an upgrade on unconvincing performers like Antonio Rudiger, Kurt Zouma and Andreas Christensen.
The Blues have been in fine form since Thomas Tuchel replaced Frank Lampard as coach, but there’s still room for improvement and Raphael Varane would bring plenty of quality and experience to this squad.
The 28-year-old defender is nearing the final year of his deal at the Santiago Bernabeu so it seems realistic that Real Madrid could look to cash in on him this summer. Red Devils could also have done well to sign Varane, however, as many will feel they still lack a quality partner for Harry Maguire.
