Italian giants plotting move for Arsenal box-to-box playmaker

Granit Xhaka could reportedly be set for a January transfer to Roma.

The Arsenal star has long been on head coach Jose Mourinho’s radar at the Stadio Olimpico outfit.

The Special One was allegedly lining up an offer over the summer but that was axed when Xhaka signed a new long-term contract.

Now though, reports in Italy say the Serie A side could return with a proposal this winter.

Italian daily Corriere dello Sport states it is ‘not impossible’ that Jose may seek to ‘reopen a channel’ for the 29-year-old.

Switzerland international Granit has seen playing time limited at the Gunners this season.

The player was sent off after just 35 minutes in his team’s 5-0 drubbing by Manchester City in the summer.

He then picked up a serious knee ligament injury that has kept the former Gladbach man out since the beginning of October.

During that time the likes of Albert Sambi Lokonga and Ainsley Maitland-Niles have shone in Mikel Arteta’s midfield.

His fresh contract in North London is one stumbling block – that runs until June 2025, meaning any move is likely to cost big money.

And I Giallorossi are also eyeing Die Fohlen’s Denis Zakaria as a possible alternative, with Xhaka said to be second choice behind his compatriot.
