Liverpool and Man City go head-to-head to sign Spanish midfielder

Liverpool’s Premier League title rivals Manchester City are in the hunt for reported Reds transfer target Fabian Ruiz, according to Gianluca Di Marzio.

The Italian outlet claims that the English champions are interested in the 23-year-old midfielder, who has emerged as one of the most coveted players in Europe.

Calcio Mercato claimed last month that Liverpool are chasing the Spanish international, as are La Liga heavyweights Real Madrid and Barcelona and German champions Bayern Munich.

Ruiz is said to be unavailable for no less than £132million, while City boss Pep Guardiola is thought to have tried to sign him many times this summer.

If Ruiz is really valued that highly by Napoli’s notoriously belligerent owner Aurelio De Laurentiis then it’s going to be incredibly difficult for anyone to sign him.

That’s clear with what played out with Man City earlier this year, with the Citizens eventually opting to get Rodri in from Atletico Madrid as midfield help instead.

Obviously there is huge interest in his services and massive competition as well, making this the sort of transfer that Liverpool are naturally opposed to. All of their big signings in recent years have been fairly straightforward deals with not too much competition – although they priced City out for Virgil van Dijk in 2018.

Having said that, it’s always going to be difficult to beat clubs like Madrid and Barcelona to a Spanish player, while the lure of working with his countryman Guardiola would also surely be great for Ruiz.

Therefore Liverpool fans shouldn’t expect to see the young midfielder in a red shirt any time soon.
