Liverpool given green light to sign 27-year-old French centre-back

The Merseyside giants are reportedly eyeing up a transfer deal for Barcelona centre-back Samuel Umtiti ahead of the summer. Liverpool are supposedly aware of Blaugrana’s desire to offload the 27-year-old defender and are interested in him as an option to bolster their depth at the defence.

The report suggests the Reds will try signing two defenders this summer, with Samuel one of their targets and possibly available for as little as £9.5m. That could end up being an absolute bargain for Liverpool if Umtiti can get back to his best, though he’s certainly gone downhill in recent times due to issues with both fitness and form.

France international was a star footballer for the Blaugrana not so long ago, however, whilst also shining at former club Lyon. The Merseyside giants would likely still benefit from the French centre-back’s presence in their squad, especially if he could come in on the cheap this summer.

The German manager has had a nightmare with injuries this campaign, with Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip all missing large chunks of the campaign. Even if the World Cup-winning defender is not the player he once was, it’s surely better having him than relying on midfielders Fabinho and Jordan Henderson in defence.
