Liverpool in the hunt to sign €35m-rated Portugal international

The coach of Liverpool transfer target Matheus Nunes fears the footballer will be leaving the team and moving to England this summer. Sporting are believed to rate Portugal international at £43m, a fee only Wolves have shown a willingness to match thus far.

Liverpool and Wolves aren’t alone in their respective pursuits of Matheus, with Man City and Spurs also interested in signing him. A report has suggested the Primeira Liga giants have already lined up their replacement in the form of Braga footballer Ricardo Horta.

The signing of Nunes would be an excellent move from Liverpool for several reasons. Firstly, the 23-year-old player will improve their depth in quality in the centre of the park. The Portuguese midfielder, with his technical quality and ability to navigate an opposition press expertly, would go some way towards filling that void.

At the moment, the German coach has decent options to pick from in that area of the pitch, but the drop-off in class when the likes of Thiago, Fabinho, and Henderson aren’t available is notable. The Portuguese is the sort of footballer who would be able to replace Alcantara with the pair sharing similar traits in their profile.

Nunes also offers perfect specificity in his profile from the Reds viewpoint. What Liverpool don’t have is a like for like replacement for Thiago within their squad. Spain international hasn’t managed to start more than 25 matches in a league campaign since joining the Reds and is now on the wrong side of 30.
