Liverpool keen on to sign Portuguese playmaker from PL rivals

Youngster Curtis Jones is not at the level to replace the Netherlands international Georginio Wijnaldium at Liverpool – Leeds United’s English star Kalvin Phillips would be a much better option.

That’s according to ex-Premier League striker Kevin Phillips, speaking to Football Insider after the Whites’ midfielder’s agent, Kevin Sharp, spoke out about speculation linking his client with an Elland Road exit.

Speaking to the Sunday Mirror, he said: “I’ve got no desire to move Kalvin and he’s got no desire to move.”

Kalvin, whose Leeds United contract expires in 2024, won plaudits aplenty in the 2020-21 season and is currently starring for his country at the Euros.

Curtis has been heralded as a replacement for Georginio and featured 24 times in the Premier League for the Reds last term.

But Phillips says that the Leeds man would represent a much better option if the player could be tempted away from Elland Road after all.

“I think Jones is a good player,” Kevin told Football Insider.

“But if Liverpool want to compete for the Champions League and Premier League again next season, you need to go out and spend money.

“Someone like Kalvin Phillips on the other hand, imagine him at Liverpool. I think he’d be a magnificent signing for them.

“I don’t think too many Leeds fans would thank me for it, but imagine him in a Liverpool shirt. He’d be a tremendous replacement.“
