Man United are weighing up a shock swoop for Sporting defender Nuno Mendes. The 19-year-old left-back, who has also been linked with Man City in the summer transfer window, has a €70m exit clause in his deal with the Lions.
Mendes has made quite a splash since breaking into the Lions first-team setup in the second half of the 2019/20 campaign. A member of Sporting since 2012, Nuno has made remarkable progress since making his bow at the club, playing 44 games to date while chipping in with a goal and two assists.
His development has also helped Nuno establish a foothold in the national team, and he was also a part of the UEFA Euro 2020 squad this summer. At the same time, Nuno has also captured the attention of some of the biggest teams in the world, with the Red Devils currently among those weighing up a summer move for the defender.
The injury sustained by Alex Telles, though, is only likely to render the Brazilian defender unavailable for the first month of the season. Post that, Alex Telles ought to be at the Norwegian manager’s disposal, with Luke Shaw being the first-choice left-back for the Red Devils anyway.
Therefore, it is unclear how Nuno would fit in the scheme of things if signed by Man United this summer, especially considering an outlay close to €70m will be required to land him. Instead, a move to Man City would be more prudent, for both the footballer and the club.
