Man United leading race to sign 20-year-old Eredivisie centre-back

Man United have been dealt with a fresh blow in their pursuit of Jurrien Timber. The Ajax centre-back has emerged as one of the Erik ten Hag’s top defensive targets in the summer, with the defender keen on a possible reunion with the footballer at Theatre of Dreams.

However, it appears Eredivisie giants are receiving “more and more signals” regarding Jurrien’s desire to remain in Amsterdam. There are many factors involved behind Timber’s second thoughts about joining the Red Devils, one of which could be the upcoming World Cup.

The Netherlands international believes remaining at the Dutch club could significantly increase his chances of becoming a part of Louis van Gaal’s squad for the World Cup, as he will keep on receiving regular playing time.

A move to Man United, on the other hand, would mean he will compete with Maguire, Varane and Lindelof for a place in the starting eleven. Bailly and Jones are also possible competitors, though both of them are likely to depart at the end of the campaign.

Even though the 20-year-old centre-back has an impressive rapport with Erik ten Hag, the defender will likely be considered second fiddle to Varane and Maguire at Man United.

Despite his potential, the defender still lacks experience at the highest level of football, which could see him struggle for regular playing time at Theatre of Dreams. The Red Devils, for their part, have no shortage of alternatives should they miss out on the Dutchman this summer.
