Barcelona are reportedly still reviewing the situation of Frenkie de Jong and other footballers ahead of the winter transfer window. The 25-year-old midfielder’s Barcelona future has been in doubt for some time now, with Man United showing an interest in him in the summer and continuing to monitor his situation.
It stays to be seen if Frenkie himself will be keen on moving to Man United, but it still looks like the Blaugrana’s plans with the midfielder have not changed. The report explains that the Catalan giants want to either reduce de Jong’s salary or offload him, and the same is true of other footballers such as Alba and Depay.
The Netherlands international could be useful for the Red Devils, though they ended up signing Casemiro from Real Madrid instead, which means they may now be happy enough with their options in midfield.
Eriksen has also ended up adjusting well to a new role, playing more like a deep-lying playmaker in the Frenkie de Jong mould, so it could be that the Danish midfielder will end up being the Dutch manager’s preferred option for that role anyway.
It is clear there is still a place for him in Erik ten Hag’s side. Casemiro is the destroyer but Eriksen is the only footballer who is able to progress the ball from deep reliably and he can’t play every game. The Blaugrana could also still be looking to move on the Dutch midfielder.
