Liverpool have reportedly stolen a march on their bitter Premier League rival Man United in the race to secure the services of Juventus centre-back Cristian Romero.
The Argentinian centre-back is currently contracted to Serie A giants, however, he is yet to play a single game for them and enjoyed a stellar campaign on loan at Atalanta BC in the 2020-21 season helping them to qualify for the Champions League.
Romero still has one year left to run on his loan deal with La Dea, who are believed to trigger his option-to-buy clause and potentially sell him for a higher price.
The Red Devils have been heavily linked with a swoop for the South American, however, according to Calciomercato, the Merseyside Reds are at the head of the queue for his services.
Jurgen Klopp’s side have already strengthened their backline with the signing of Ibrahima Konate from Bundesliga outfits RB Leipzig, and the report claims that Atalanta would be unlikely to consider selling Romero unless they receive a bid of at least €50m (£43m).
Romero has found back of the net three times and assisted five more in 42 games for Atalanta last season, and he has played the first game at COPA America in a 1-1 draw against Chille.
