Simon Mignolet is now a distant memory at Liverpool.
The comparative prowess of Alisson Becker and Adrian means Jurgen Klopp’s goalkeeping headaches are long behind him.
With no realistic chance of ever being able to rectify his errors on Merseyside, Mignolet returned to his native Belgium with Club Brugge in August, signing a five-year deal.
In truth, he attracted plenty of sympathy in his last season in England, unable to oust Alisson but forced to stay at Anfield while fellow back-up ‘keeper Loris Karius remained on loan.
The 31-year-old is now cutting an altogether happier figure at the Jan Breydel Stadium, playing 16 games in all competitions.
Club Brugge are running away with the Jupiler League, a situation not dissimilar to that of his former employers.
However, while the rest of Europe continues to wax lyrical about the Champions League holders, Mignolet believes he has witnessed players of a similar – or even better – level in training with his new teammates.
“Both Hans [Vanaken] and Ruud [Vormer] are very good finishers,’ he told Het Laaste Nieuws, per the Mail.
“[Roberto] Firmino and Mo [Salah] are of course incredible football players, but Firmino is not a born killer.
“Hans and Ruud should certainly not be inferior to Bobby in terms of finishing.
“I even dare to say that Hans and Ruud on that are better than Roberto Firmino. And that they are of a comparable level to Mo.”
Firmino earned Liverpool another vital three points with the winner against Tottenham on Saturday evening. All the while, Vormer has scored one league goal all season.
He must be something else in training for Mignolet to come to that conclusion…
To make matters worse, the duo are also said to have mocked the Liverpool forwards – at least according to Mignolet, anyway.
”When Ruud or Hans score in training, they shout ‘that’s something different from Firmino and Salah, huh!’
”Our relationship is very good. The atmosphere in training and the experience here is great.”
Mignolet will largely be looked back on with indifference at Liverpool these days – but his comments are unlikely to diminish a lot of that respect.
Firmino is one of the deadliest finishers around and his old teammate ought to know better.
