“There’s a position for him”: Liverpool urged to sign creative star from Premier League rivals

Former Reds man Steve McMahon says that Jurgen Klopp should be going all out to sign Leicester City midfielder James Maddison at the earliest possible opportunity.

Maddison has been linked with a move to the Reds for a number of months and after he scored at Anfield on Saturday, that speculation was not going to die down.

Speaking to Stadium Astro, McMahon said: “I don’t think he’s going to be at Leicester for a long, long time. I really don’t. I think Maddison has another level to go. I think there’s a top team, if it’s not Liverpool then United maybe, they’ll be in for him. He can only get better.

“He’s got a lot going for him. He changes the tempo of the game, why wouldn’t he get in Liverpool’s midfield? Henderson has been getting replaced for ever with Milner, Keita has not come on leaps and bounds, Fabinho is the holding midfield player.

“There’s a position there for him. If he came and he knuckled down, and he got his work ethic sorted, I see no reason why he wouldn’t fit in.”

McMahon’s comments on Jordan Henderson, a Champions League-winning captain, and Naby Keita, who has been unfortunate with injuries, seem a little harsh, but there can be no doubting Maddison has huge quality. His lack of worth ethic is also a bit of a myth.

The big question would be over the price-tag that Leicester would place on their star man. Would the Reds be prepared to spend what would no doubt be a colossal amount on someone to come into an area of the field which is already well-stocked in terms of numbers?
